Character Design

Goal: Design a 27th character of the alphabet in both uppercase and lowercase formats. The new character must have an independent meaning and integrate seamlessly with the rest of the alphabet in multiple typefaces.

Strategy: Designing a new character was a task that required critical and creative thinking. In creating this character, which replaces the suffix “-ing”, I considered the principles of composition, figure/ground, and gestalt. I considered the unique proportions, weight, and angle when designing the character for a specific typeface. In translating sketches of the character to electronic format, I displayed a high degree of precision and accuracy in construction of the character, achieved through multiple iterations.
